Apr. 6--A 16-year-old Quakertown high school student sold small amounts of marijuana to his 15-year-old classmate, whose stash was found hidden in the battery compartment of his cell phone, according to police and school officials.
"He had it in his cell phone, that was how he brought it into school," said Superintendent Jim Scanlon of the 15-year-old.
Quakertown police on Tuesday charged the two students with possession of marijuana. Their cases will be heard in Bucks County Juvenile Court.
"We don't know how many times the 16-year-old sold the 15-year-old drugs, but we know it was more than once and was on school property," said Police Chief Scott McElree.
He added the 16-year-old was also in possession of a small amount of marijuana, but there is not sufficient evidence to charge him with possession with the intent to sell an illegal drug.
McElree said he did not know the exact amount of marijuana found.
"We're waiting for that information to come back from the lab," he said, adding each students possessed well under an ounce of marijuana.
According to Scanlon, on March 28, administrators at the Freshman Center heard rumors a student had brought marijuana to school.
"Kids were talking and the principal and assistant principal tracked it down," Scanlon said, adding school officials have the legal right to search a student and his locker if they have reason to believe the student may be in possession of an illegal drug or weapon.
