2006 American Forest & Paper Association School Recycling Award Presented to Mountain Home High School in Arkansas

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) today announced that Mountain Home High School in Mountain Home, Arkansas has received the 2006 School Recycling Award in the school-wide category. The award recognizes a school that has implemented a successful school-wide recycling program.

The Mountain Home High School set out to create a recycling program with ambitious goals: promote the conservation of natural resources; educate students about what can be recycled; benefit students from having a direct and positive effect on the community; encourage students to grow into adults who understand the culture of recycling; and team students of different abilities to create inclusion for special education students and allow them to learn how to work successfully in a group.

As a result of students' efforts, more than 6 million tons of paper recovered for recycling during the 2004-2005 school year. With the help of a grant from the Keep America Beautiful Foundation and the support of the school administration and community, the program has fast become a model of success.

The AF&PA Recycling Awards were created to recognize outstanding individual, business, community and school paper recycling efforts. In 2005, a record-high 51.5 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling. The paper industry has set an ambitious goal of 55 percent recovery by 2012. It is only through the continued efforts of the millions of Americans who recycle at home, work and school that this goal will be achieved.
