Apr. 13–ST. FRANCIS — A native of Boston was arrested without incident in St. Francis Tuesday night for outstanding drug-related felony warrants in three states.

Joseph Engebretson, 28, is wanted in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Arizona on felony drug probation warrants, all extraditable offenses, according to Maine State Police Trooper Corey Hafford Wednesday morning.

Engebretson was taken to the city jail at Caribou after his arrest.

He was scheduled to appear in District Court at Presque Isle Wednesday, but that did not happen, according to Carrie Linthicum, Aroostook County assistant district attorney.

Todd Collins, assistant district attorney in Caribou, said Wednesday afternoon that Engebretson was being transported to the Aroostook County Jail at Houlton.

He will be arraigned in District Court at Presque Isle on Friday.

Hafford and Maine State Police Trooper Daniel Marquis were looking for Engebretson in connection with an attempted break-in at the Sunset Apartments in St. Francis. They found out Tuesday afternoon about the outstanding warrants against the man.

Police said Engebretson had been living in St. Francis with his girlfriend for about one month.

Hafford said the man gave police no problems when the vehicle he was a passenger in was stopped on Route 161, Main Street in St. Francis at about 8 p.m.

Engebretson’s name came up during the investigation of the April 5 attempted break-in at the St. Francis apartments. Someone had mentioned the name of Joey during the investigation. There was no entry made into any apartments in the April 5 incident.

Maine State Police Detective Mark Sperrey discovered the outstanding warrants when checking out the Boston native’s identification.

Hafford said there are three warrants for Engebretson in Massachusetts, and one warrant each in New Hampshire and Arizona.

“We noticed a white Ford Ranger when we turned onto Sunset Drive Tuesday night,” Hafford said. “We knew it was the vehicle he was using.

“The pickup truck had its turn signal on when we saw it, but then the signal was turned off and vehicle turned onto Main Street,” he continued. “We followed and pulled the vehicle over on a traffic stop.”

Engebretson was a passenger in the vehicle driven by his girlfriend, a woman who is originally from Houlton. She was not identified by police. The pickup truck Engebretson was in is owned by his mother.
