Apr. 14--A Cutler Bay mother and daughter were killed and two family members were injured on an Easter weekend family trip to Pensacola, a Florida Highway spokesman said today.
Arlene F. Gutierrez, 41, and Karina Gutierrez, 13, died late Thursday after the family crashed on the Florida Turnpike south of St. Cloud. Survivors Eduardo Gutierrez, 20, and Christina Gutierrez, 18, who were airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center, are in critical condition, Sgt. Jorge Delahoz said.
The single-vehicle crash happened around 9 p.m. as the family headed north near Canoe Creek service plaza, Delahoz said.
The driver of the family's 2000 gold Nissan Pathfinder, according to witnesses, swerved in the left lane several times before leaving the road. family's SUV rolled over four times, and all passengers were ejected. They were not wearing seat belts, Delahoz said.
"The mother was thrown over 100 feet to a wooden shrubbery," Delahoz said. "We haven't figured out who the driver was."
