Kobelco Unit Starts Extracting Pure PVC Material From PVC Waste

Posted on: Thursday, 20 April 2006, 12:00 CDT

By Kyodo News International, Tokyo

Apr. 20--TOKYO -- Kobelco Vinyloop East Co., a Kobe Steel Ltd. group unit, said Thursday its new recycling factory began extracting pure material for polyvinyl chloride from used agricultural vinyl sheets and other goods made of polyvinyl chloride.

The factory in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, has become the first plant in Japan to extract the polyvinyl chloride material from used polyvinyl chloride-based goods, rather than merely transforming waste into industrial material like carpet lining, the company said.

The factory does extraction work after dissolving with solvents used greenhouse sheets, wallpaper and coverings for electric wires, unlike the conventional process of processing such wastes with heat.

The factory has an annual extraction capacity of 18,000 tons.
