Apr. 21--HIROSHIMA -- Sport ball maker Molten Corp. said Friday it has built one of the world's largest plants in China to start production of soccer, basket and other balls on May 1 prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The $14 million plant, located in Jiazing about 90 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, will produce 1 million balls in the initial year and expand annual production to 7 million to 8 million balls by 2010 on the strength of the Olympics, the Hiroshima-based company said.
"Molten is willing to market its balls throughout China by the time of the Olympics," said Molten President Fumiya Tamiaki.
Molten expects to boost annual sales in China to 2 billion yen and capture 10 percent of China's ball market in fiscal 2010.
