HARRISBURG, Pa., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell today released $200,000 to reimburse Montgomery County for 80 percent of the costs of revising its municipal waste management plan.
"This grant is another example of the power of state and county partnerships," Rendell said. "Working together, we are protecting Pennsylvania's natural heritage today and for future generations. Proper waste management keeps our environment clean as our economy grows and it helps to ensure that residents enjoy a high quality of life. It also makes our state a more attractive place to live, work and play."
The Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101 of 1988) requires each county in Pennsylvania to submit to the Department of Environmental Protection an officially adopted municipal waste management plan for waste generated within its boundaries.
The plans describe the origin, content and weight or volume of municipal waste generated within the county's boundaries both currently and for waste expected to be generated there during the next 10 years. The plans also:
-- Ensure disposal capacity for the next 10 years. -- Identify facilities where municipal waste is disposed of or processed and the remaining available permitted capacity of such facilities. -- Contain an analysis of the effect of recycling on waste generated within the county. -- Describe the costs of related facilities, recycling programs or waste reduction programs during the next 10 years.
Within 120 days after receiving a complete plan, DEP is required to give it preliminary or technical approval or disapprove it.
"How we manage municipal waste, including finding ways to recycle and reuse materials, has a direct impact on Pennsylvania's economy," DEP Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty said. "These efforts help us grow our way to better resource stewardship and sustainable development."
The County Municipal Waste Management Planning Grant Program reimburses counties for up to 80 percent of the costs of revising the plans. Applications for the grants may be submitted at any time.
