Apr. 28--Let the spring cleaning frenzy begin.
The Brown County Landfill, in partnership with the City of Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce, is offering free spring residential cleanup beginning today through June 3.
"It's a good community service to get the waste cleaned up and get the community looking good," said landfill manager Mike Scott.
The landfill will accept tires, paint, trees, rubble, batteries, furniture, waste oil, antifreeze, appliances, scrap metal, propane tanks, grass, leaves and miscellaneous waste -- all free of charge. Mobile homes are not accepted.
Landfill hours are 8 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Items can be also dropped off for free today and Saturday at Jensen Rock and Sand Inc. on South Fifth Street and the Brown County Highway Department on Eighth Avenue Northeast.
The hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday and 8 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Items accepted at those two locations include tires, batteries, furniture, appliances, scrap metal, other miscellaneous waste and rubble. Anything else must be taken to the landfill.
Loads must be secured and covered and tires removed from rims. Refrigerators and freezers do not have to have Freon removed in advance.
The free cleanup is for residential waste only. People bringing in business or commercial waste will be charged.
Scott said that an estimated 2,000 tons of waste was collected from 4,000 customers during last spring's cleanup.
That may seem like a lot, but "getting in and out of the landfill should not be a problem," he said. "People should not have to get in line."
To prepare for the influx of trash, the landfill selects areas for certain types of waste and cleans those areas, removing or compacting items to make room.
"We just make sure we have enough locations designated for the waste types," said Scott.
A common myth, he said, is that when you go to the landfill, you'll get a flat tire because of all the nails lying on the ground.
"We have magnets running the yard to make sure the general public doesn't have trouble with nails," he said.
Other communities: The landfill is also sponsoring free residential cleanup in Brown County from May 5-13. Residents of Hecla, Frederick, Claremont and surrounding areas can drop waste off at the Brown County Highway Shops, Columbia residents south of Wheat Growers, Warner residents at a container site 11/4 miles west of Warner and Stratford residents at the city ball field entrance.
All surrounding areas are included. Wood waste and trees are not accepted at those sites.
The landfill is located at 13225 379th Ave. From Hardee's, it is 6 miles west and 1 miles north.
