Apr. 26--WEST LIBERTY ... West Liberty Foods announced plans Tuesday to open a new poultry processing plant in Utah next year.
Construction will begin within the next 90 days on a new Utah plant that will be the company's fourth. West Liberty Foods is working with Millard Refrigerated Services of Omaha to develop an adjacent cold storage warehouse.
West Liberty Foods President and CEO Ed Garrett said the ready-to-eat chicken line will give the company an opportunity to introduce new product lines to its current customers.
The location of the Utah plant was not specified. However, West Liberty Foods announced a sales and marketing alliance with Norbest Foods of Midvale, Utah, earlier this year.
The Utah plant will create 500 new jobs and will have 1.6 million pounds per week of processing capacity.
Components of the facility will include a 67,000-square- foot slicing facility and 70,000- square-foot log fabrication facility. The log fabrication area will also house ready-to-eat chicken processing.
West Liberty Foods LLC is a leading co-packer, private label manufacturer and food service supplier of sliced processed meat and poultry products.
Slaughtering operations are not planned for the Utah facility.
