PRODUCE SAFETY AND SECURITY INTERNATIONAL, INC. (OTC: PDSC), ("PDSC"), an ozone and chemical sanitation disinfectant process supplier to the food and medical industries, responds to the FDA and fresh produce industry's concern over recent outbreaks of E. coli H157 virus. Produce Safety would like to provide further information concerning its FDA approved Ozone Process and EPA Registered Spherequat(R) 8600 R-T-U (Ready-To-Use) cleaning and disinfectant line of products and their effectiveness against the food-borne virus E. coli.
In an April 28th, 2006 MSNBC Dateline investigative report titled "Unseen danger in bagged salads," Dateline documents several cases of E. coli infections that were traced back to contaminated lettuce found in ready-made bagged salads. A major food company mentioned in the article issued a voluntary recall of the bag salads implicated in the outbreak, but not before at least 26 people in three states had gotten very sick. Dr. Steve Swanson of the Centers for Disease Control stated, "It's a remarkable fact that most are not aware of that next to ground beef, lettuce is the most commonly implicated food item for E. coli H157 infections." While the E. coli outbreak was unusual, it is not an isolated incident. The Food and Drug administration says there has been at least 19 food-borne illness outbreaks linked to leafy greens, including raw spinach, since 1995, 425 people have become seriously ill, and two have died. Dr. Robert Brackett, head of food safety at the FDA, stated, "Over the last five years or so, we have noticed a real increase in the number of outbreaks that were traced back to fresh produce."
FDA has directed the Fresh Produce Industry to take preventative measures to prevent these outbreaks from occurring. Produce Safety starts by bringing the product into the facility for processing with its proprietary Ozone Process. Each lot is chemically tested for E. coli H157, Salmonella and Listeria. The Ozone Process meets the regulations of the FDA, USDA, HACCP and APHIS. Produce Safety provides a complete checks and balance with the continuing process of chemical analysis for all pathogens providing a Food Safe Product to the consumer. Produce Safety is able to monitor the product all through the food chain providing an audit trail for food illness outbreaks in the chain. The Ozone Process can be used at the retail level in each produce section of the store.
Clarence W. Karney, Chief Executive Officer of Produce Safety & Security International, Inc., states, "This is the primary reason we got into this business in the first place." Mr. Karney continues by stating, "We are well positioned to address these concerns with our Ozone Process and Spherequat(R) 8600 R-T-U products for immediate implementation to the Fresh Produce Industry."
