May 9--OSAKA -- Itoham Foods Inc. said Tuesday it will raise prices of ham, sausage and other pork-based food products by an average of 10 percent in July due to rising import prices of pork materials.
The second-largest Japanese ham and sausage maker will follow the lead of the largest, Nippon Meat Packers Inc., which earlier announced a plan to boost prices of similar products by an average of 10 percent in June.
Pork import prices have soared on greater demand as consumers have been worried by reports of mad cow disease and avian influenza, affecting demand for beef and chicken products.
The planned price hike, which will cover most of Itoham's processed food products including hamburgers, also reflects an oil price upsurge that has boosted costs for packing materials, Itoham said.
"Cost-saving efforts can no longer absorb hikes in materials prices that have turned out not to be temporary," an Itoham official said.
