GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will present Steelcase Inc. , a global office environments manufacturer, with a 2006 Neighborhood Environmental Partners Gold Award on May 11 to recognize the company's efforts to initiate local projects that work towards raising environmental awareness and the quality of life within Michigan communities.
"At Steelcase, we're committed to environmental stewardship. Our vision is to sustain a business infrastructure that not only protects, but helps replenish and restore the environments we impact -- at work and within the community," said James P. Hackett, President and CEO of Steelcase Inc. "This is demonstrated through contributions large and small -- from product development strategies to community recycling efforts, from environmental education and awareness to working with suppliers on environmentally responsible programs. It is an honor to be recognized for these efforts."
DEQ Director Steve Chester will present the award in Grand Rapids as a part of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Neighborhood Environmental Partners Program.
"I am happy to recognize Steelcase Inc. for its outstanding work within the Grand Rapids community," said DEQ Director Steven E. Chester. "Steelcase is proving that economic success and environmental stewardship go hand and hand."
Aimed at businesses, neighborhood organizations and local governments, the program recognizes local efforts that promote environmental awareness.
"Steelcase takes pride in its proactive environmental programs and has worked to demonstrate leadership in earth friendly initiatives for nearly a century," said David Rinard, Director of Corporate Environmental Performance for Steelcase Inc.
In addition to pursuing its environmental performance goals in manufacturing, Steelcase launched the Environmental Partnership Program in 2004 to help its customers identify and manage the disposal of products they no longer need.
In September of 2005, Steelcase hosted the second Annual Green by Design Symposium, aimed at promoting sustainable, eco-friendly strategies in product development, manufacturing and distribution. The event attracted over 325 attendees to attend workshops and lectures by environmental leaders such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Stuart Hart and Tom Chappell.
Additionally, Steelcase is dedicated to contributing to the improvement of its local communities through a variety of outreach programs including environmental education, Adopt-A-Highway programs and the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Collection.
