Opening in April 2004 in Washington, D.C., the Marian Koshland Science Museum will explore the links between scientific research and everyday life. Created by the National Academy of Sciences, the museum's focus will be how science influences public policy.
"The museum will show visitors the excitement of science through exhibits that demonstrate how science impacts their lives on a personal level," said Daniel Koshland, founder of the Koshland Science Museum. "We hope that visitors to the museum will leave with a better understanding of science and how it can help inform their decisions about scientific issues in the news today."
The museum's three initial exhibits-the Wonders of Science, Global Warming Facts &. Our Future, and Putting DNA to Work-will contain interactive displays, graphics, videos, and scientific projections.
The Wonders of Science, showcasing important research and pivotal scientific discoveries, is the museum's permanent exhibit; the other two will be in place for two years before traveling to other museums across the country.
Global Warming Facts &. Our Future is designed to inform visitors about the science behind the global warming trend and the implications on the world's quality of life. The exhibit will use state-of-the-art representations of shifts in carbon dioxide emissions and temperature and offers predictions for the next century. One part of the exhibit will allow visitors to see what will happen if the sea level rises, using the Chesapeake Bay as an example.
The namesake of the museum, Marian Koshland (1921-1997), was a National Academy of Sciences member whose career included work on the cholera vaccine and research on antibody behavior.
