Americans Recycled More Aluminum Cans Last Year
NEW YORK — Americans recycled slightly more of their aluminum beverage cans last year than in 2004, according to data released on Wednesday by aluminum industry groups.
U.S. consumers recycled 51.4 billion aluminum beverage cans in 2005, for a can recycling rate of 52 percent. That compares with a 2004 can recycling rate of 51.2 percent of 100.5 billion cans shipped, according to a press release issued by the Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute, and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.
The aluminum can is the most recycled beverage container in the United States, at more than twice the rate of other beverage package materials, the groups said.
In 2003, the recycling rate was 50 percent of 99.7 billion shipped cans.
The aluminum industry produced about 98.9 billion cans last year. The 51.4 billion aluminum cans recycled equals about 1.5 billion lbs.
