Wikipedia: Lima [LIE-Muh] is a City in Allen County, Ohio: Area Volunteers Work to Update Lima Listing

May 20--LIMA -- Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that can be added to or edited by anyone, is in the top 20 for Web site viewing, meaning that lots of people are reading.

Right now, they're not seeing much about Lima, and Mayor D a v i d B e r g e r wanted to fix that. In connection

with the city's 175th anniversary this year, a group of students and other volunteers have been writing articles on the city's history. The work will be posted in August.

Berger honored the volunteers Friday and announced the project.

Students from OSU-Lima, Lima Senior High School, Lima Central Catholic and other volunteers from Lima Public Library, Allen County Historical Society, Lima schools and The Lima News received accolades from Berger for contributions to the city's entry in Wikipedia.

Last summer, Berger saw the city's entry on Wikipedia; it consisted of three s e n t e n c e s about location and population. When he checked again, he found a larger entry that included some ugly pictures, Berger said.

"I was thinking with my chamber of commerce hat and decided that we needed to take charge of our entry," Berger said. "It's a place to go for a universe of topics, and if that many people are going there, we need up-to-date, accurate information."

Former City Council member David Adams chaired the effort, which includes information on general history, hospitals, railroads, oil and culture.

"I've lived here all my life, and it was interesting to become part of a larger community effort," said Megan Collar, an OSU-Lima student majoring in history.
