Apply Now for Reduced City Garbage Fee
By The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson
May 21–The city of Tucson is accepting applications from people needing assistance with its garbage-pickup fee. The help is available to customers whose income is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
The discount reduces the monthly trash fee from $14 to $2.
The income limits are $14,364 for one person, $19,248 for a couple, and $29,040 for a family of four.
An insert containing information about the assistance program and its guidelines will be included with May garbage and water utility statements.
Residential customers should call 791-3171 for an application, or an application can be downloaded at www.tucsonaz.gov/pdf/lowincomeapp.pdf, the city’s Web site.
The assistance program will begin on July 1.
The new program requires that customers submit an application each calendar year, and once approved, residents will receive the $12 discount on their bill each month. Residents only need to apply yearly under the new program, instead of every month as under the old program.
Residents who are already enrolled in the old program will automatically be enrolled into the new program and won’t have to fill out an application until late this year.
