SMITHFIELD, Va., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has inducted Gwaltney of Smithfield and Smithfield Transportation Company's Smithfield Division into an Agency program limited to companies that exceed routine compliance with environmental laws.
The two Smithfield Foods, Inc. subsidiaries are members of the EPA's Performance Track Program, which includes about 400 U.S. companies. The program was launched in 2000 to offer regulatory incentives to companies that go beyond meeting legal requirements in the areas of energy and water usage and conservation, discharges to waterways, air emissions, waste generation and preservation of natural resources.
"By committing to conservation, America's leading companies are proving that doing what's good for the environment is also good for business," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson.
"This is a tremendous honor and well-deserved recognition for all the hard work of our employees at Smithfield's Gwaltney facility and the Smithfield Transportation shop," said Norman Fisher, vice president of environmental affairs and fleet safety at Smithfield.
"Gaining membership in this exclusive EPA program involved completing a very intense application process, and it means we are meeting the highest industry requirements for environmental stewardship," Fisher said. "We intend to continually improve our processes and conservation efforts so that we can renew our membership each year."
As Performance Track members, the Gwaltney and Smithfield Transportation facilities are expected to submit annual performance reports to the EPA that demonstrate they are meeting their environmental commitments. In addition, both companies must demonstrate ongoing good-faith efforts toward continuous improvement, maintenance of their individual Environmental Management System and a commitment to community outreach.
"We're very proud of the Gwaltney and Smithfield Transportation employees for this remarkable achievement," said C. Larry Pope, president and chief operating officer for Smithfield Foods. "We take environmental stewardship very seriously and we give top priority to meeting -- and exceeding -- our environmental goals at all of our subsidiaries."
Smithfield Foods has delivered a 25 percent average annual compounded rate of return to investors since 1975. With sales of $11 billion, Smithfield is the leading processor and marketer of fresh pork and processed meats in the United States, as well as the largest producer of hogs.
