Whatcom Land Trust Given Acreage

May 30–Nearly 40 acres in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest have been preserved through a conservation easement donated to the Whatcom Land Trust.

The land is northeast of Mount Baker, on the northeast side of Goat Mountain. It is entirely surrounded by a wilderness area.

Doug Walker, the founding partner of former Seattle software company WRQ, bought the land and donated the development, logging and mining rights to the Land Trust, according to information provided by Land Trust Development Director Jerry DeBacker.

A prospector claimed the land in 1909, during the height of the Mount Baker gold rush, but little or no mining took place on the property, according to the Land Trust.

The easement brings the total acres of land preserved by Whatcom Land Trust to 7,783.
