May 31--Bidders propose monthly fees of $17.35 and $15.38 per household
The process of bringing curbside garbage pickup to the city of Smiths Station, Ala., moved forward Tuesday, when bids were opened for the garbage service.
Mayor LaFaye Dellinger, Councilman James Moody and City Attorney Rick Chancey opened bids from two solid-waste providers -- Sunflower Waste and Waste Management -- shortly after 10 a.m. in the council chambers of the Smiths Station Government Center.
Sunflower bid a monthly charge of $17.35 per customer, with an additional $9.67 for an additional cart. Waste Management's bid included a $15.38 monthly charge, with $8 for an additional cart.
The provider selected will provide regular curbside garbage pickup for an estimated 1,300 customers in the city, plus the pickup of limbs and other debris.
The two bidders differed on the retrieval and disposal of "white goods" -- appliances such as refrigerators and stoves.
Waste Management made no bid on white goods -- the individual customer would request pickup for an additional fee estimated at $7-$10. White goods pickup and disposal is included in the Sunflower bid.
The city's solid waste committee -- Moody, Chancey and Councilman Morris Jackson -- will study the proposals and make a recommendation to the City Council at its next meeting on June 13. The committee has tentatively scheduled a work session for 6 p.m. Monday at the government center.
Smiths Station's garbage needs have been taken care of through county-run solid waste disposal sites for decades. Residents pay a $12 per month fee ($144 yearly) to the county when paying taxes. This included no curbside pickup of any type, with citizens taking their garbage and other solid waste to the disposal sites.
Curbside service, if approved by the Smiths Station City Council, will begin on Oct. 1.
