Jun. 6--MANATEE -- Though supportive of the concept, Manatee County commissioners postponed voting on a proposal today that would help fund an area-wide environmental impact study of the phosphate industry in Southwest Florida.
Sarasota County Commission agreed last month to help fund up to $500,000 for the study.
Save our Watersheds, an environmental group pushing for the study, has been trying to get the financial support of Charlotte, Lee, and Manatee counties.
The Army Corps of Engineers would conduct the study of phosphate mining's impact on the Peace River and Myakka River watersheds, in addition to the effects on Charlotte Harbor.
Commissioner Joe McClash said the commission supports the concept behind the study, but directed county staff to come back with information regarding current studies that are being done on the area's water supply, to determine if there was in fact a need for another study.
