IBM Executive Vice President and Utah Governor Commend Neumont University and Graduates in First Commencement

Posted on: Thursday, 8 June 2006, 18:00 CDT

SALT LAKE CITY, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Neumont University, offering Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Master of Business Administration degrees, received industry and government praise in the first-ever commencement held May 26. Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. and IBM Executive Vice President for Innovation and Technology, Nicholas M. Donofrio praised the graduates and the school for their industry leadership and innovative education model for software developers.

"This is a first," remarked Governor Huntsman. "The nation is taking note. Neumont is an innovative, creative and dynamic program." Regarding the business skills of graduates, Huntsman added, "Talk about marketability! You people have it."

Neumont University offers a paradigm-shifting approach to post-secondary Computer Science education. Unlike traditional programs, Neumont University students are immersed in an intense, 30-month series of increasingly more complex real world, enterprise-level IT projects. This hands-on approach allows students to rapidly integrate the theoretical base they receive in the classroom and the practical experience they gain building systems into the real world.

"You are correct by construction," Donofrio commented to the students. "We are a services driven economy; 75 percent of our [U.S.] GDP is service driven. "You are the closest people I have found anywhere in the world who actually come out [of school] service ready. You are pioneers."

Mr. Donofrio indicated to the students that his remarks regarding Neumont University closely matched his recent testimony before the U.S. Department of Education Commission on the Future of Higher Education. http://www.connectlive.com/events/highered0506/

The commencement honored the University's first graduates. One hundred percent of graduates accepted job offers before the commencement ceremonies with average starting salaries of $58,646*, 15% above the national average for new graduates in Computer Science according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers Spring 2006 Salary Survey. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reports computer software engineers, such as Neumont University graduates, to experience one of the fastest-growing occupations through 2014.

"Employers are willing to pay a premium for our graduates because of what they can do, not just because of what they know," said Graham Doxey, Neumont University president.

Commencement exercises were held at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City. Complete commencement addresses from both Mr. Donofrio and Governor Huntsman may be viewed at http://www.neumont.edu/about-university/news-articles.html
