Jun. 9--People interested in snowy plovers can attend an informational meeting by the federal Fish and Wildlife Service June 15 in Ventura to discuss a special rule proposed for the tiny bird.
The rule would allow loss of plovers in counties that comply with management rules for the bird. It is intended to give local agencies more flexibility in managing the bird to minimize local impacts such as beach closures.
The agency recently ruled that plover populations that live along the West Coast are a distinct population and are still threatened by habitat loss. It was added to the federal endangered species list in 1983.
The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ventura Fish and Wildlife office, 2471 Portola Road. Public comment will be taken until June 20.
