Jun. 10--Flames from a construction debris fire shot nearly 60 feet into the twilight Friday evening as a nearly full moon hung overhead. Firetrucks blocked traffic briefly on County 390 while firefighters hauled hoses to hydrants. A thick yellow hose closed Pipeline Road as it stretched nearly 200 yards from hydrant to fire.
Bay County fire crews fought a blaze at C&D Landfill off County 390. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Mark Bowen, chief of emergency services for Bay County.
"We'll be here through the evening fighting this fire," Bowen said.
The owner of the landfill used a backhoe and tractors to help separate fiery debris from the unburnt pile so firefighters could dose it with water, Bowen said.
The Division of Forestry brought an extra tractor in case the fire broke out into a wooded area to the east of the landfill. Several homes and a horse farm could have been threatened if the fire spread, said Cory Wilson, forest area supervisor.
"It's just so dry right now we don't want ash and embers from this fire to start another fire," Bowen said.
The fire was limited to a pile of debris on top of the landfill, Bowen said.
The pile caught fire a little before 6 p.m., said David Ballasso. Ballasso visited a friend's house off Pipeline Road for a cookout, when he saw smoke and flames.
"The fire department had to cut the lock on the gate to get at the fire," Ballasso said. Witnesses heard several loud explosions shortly after the fire began.
"It sounded like propane bottles exploding," Ballasso said.
Pipeline Road resident Nathan West called 9-1-1. "I thought someone was having a bigger cookout than I was," West said. The C&D Landfill has seen three fires before, Bowen said. "We fought one fire for two or three weeks," Bowen said.
