Produce Safety and Security International Announces Solution for the Threat of Hantavirus
Posted on: Tuesday, 20 June 2006, 06:00 CDT
Produce Safety and Security International, Inc (PINKSHEETS: PDSC), a sanitation disinfectant process supplier to the food and medical industries, announces the Spherequat(R) 8600 R-T-U is a solution for Hantavirus confirmed outbreaks in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, New Mexico and Washington.
The current outbreak has been highlighted in a variety of reports. For example, a recent USA TODAY article titled "Officials warn of increased threat of Hantavirus" confirmed a "surge in deadly Hantavirus cases," due to an increase in the number of mice, is causing alarm with public health experts, because Hantavirus "cases typically become more frequent as summer approaches."
The article further stated that in Arizona, the state's Department of Health Services reported eight cases in 2006, including five deaths, before the end of May. Craig Levy, of the Vector-borne Disease Program for the Arizona DHS, was quoted as saying, "It's the highest number of cases that we've ever had in the state before the end of May," and that Arizona will see a record number of cases this year, if the trend continues.
Abbigail Tumpey, spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was also quoted. She said, "Being that there is such a high mortality rate, prevention is so important." That is because Hantavirus kills about a third of the people who become infected and the virus can be transmitted via airborne particles, when areas where mice have lived are improperly cleaned. Therefore, the virus must be killed in areas where mice have been to prevent transmission.
The benefit of using the Spherequat 8600 R-T-U EPA Registered product versus other non EPA Registered Product is the effectiveness of the Spherequat 8600 R-T-U.
Clarence W. Karney, CEO of Produce Safety & Security International, said, "Spherequat 8600 R-T-U's performance has been EPA certified and confirmed by independent laboratory tests. It is a very important, and cost effective, tool for residential and business facilities in the effort to rid areas of possible infectious deadly disease, therefore we have made special provisions to position additional inventory of Spherequat 8600 R-T-U at our Arizona distribution center for immediate delivery.
"Our assortment of versatile products allows us to, typically, utilize a four step approach that allows us to be in front of the curve on most concerns we deal with and the Hantavirus outbreak is no different. The four steps include problem detection, solution recognition, education and inventory."
Special Instructions for Cleaning and Decontaminating areas which may be infested with Hantavirus Infection
Hantavirus occurs by inhalation of infectious materials, thus it's imperative that persons involved with cleanup wear coveralls (disposable, if possible), rubber boots or disposable shoe covers, rubber or plastic gloves, protective goggles, and an air purifying half mask, negative pressure respirator with a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter respirator or a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with HEPA filter.
Decontaminate Personal Protective gear upon removal at the end of the day. If the coveralls are not disposable, they must be laundered on site. If no laundry facilities are available, the coveralls must be immersed in liquid disinfectant until they can be washed.
All potentially infective waste material (including respirator filter) from cleanup operations that cannot be burned or deep buried on site must be double bagged in appropriate plastic bags. The bagged material must then be labeled as infectious (if it is to be transported) and disposed of in accordance with local requirements for infectious waste. Rodent droppings and visible dust may be reservoirs for Hantavirus.
When cleaning out a building that has been closed up, such as a cabin, shed or garage, air out the building for at least 30 minutes by opening windows and doors. Leave the building while it is airing out.
Do not vacuum, sweep or dust. This may spread the virus through the air.
Thoroughly wet the contaminated areas with the product and allow to stand undisturbed for contact time specified by the manufacturer's label. Carefully remove contaminated material and dispose by burial or burning. Contact your local and state health department for additional disposal methods. Treat the surface again following the manufacturer's label directions.
