MichBio Announces Grand Rapids Student Life Science Career Day

Posted on: Thursday, 6 July 2006, 18:00 CDT

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- MichBio, Michigan's life science trade association dedicated to driving the growth of the life sciences industry, announces the MichBio Student Life Science Career Day October 10, 2006 in Grand Rapids. Grand Valley State University and the Van Andel Institute, in partnership with MichBio, will host the career day. This event is for high school students in the greater Grand Rapids area that are interested in pursuing a science career. The career day takes place on the first day of the 3-day MichBio Expo 2006 held on October 10, 11 and 12.

The program will feature Jim Jordan, an internationally renowned motivational speaker, who will guide students through a series of exercises and fun demonstrations to help them seek out the career path suited best for them. A panel of the state's top life science industry experts will discuss their career paths, sharing personal advice regarding education and work experience. Additionally, students will tour the Cook DeVos Center for Health Sciences research laboratory facilities.

This is MichBio's second student life science career day event. Last year, Wayne State University and university president Reid hosted the career day with over 180 students in attendance. The purpose of this event is to introduce Michigan's top high school students to the excellent life science university programs and career opportunities available here in the state. The goal is to retain Michigan's best students by encouraging them to attend state universities and work for state businesses.

Invitations will be given to a maximum of three students and one teacher per the greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan area schools. It is anticipated that 100 schools will participate. This event is free to students and their chaperones. Interested schools should contact Lauren Reed, Program Director, at lauren@michbio.org .

The MichBio Expo 2006 will attract more than 800 participants from across the state to Grand Rapids. Day two, October 11, of the Expo will present an afternoon of tours focused on the area's leading life science businesses. Simultaneously, industry service providers will present educational symposia. The day will conclude with the Expo's opening reception on the exhibitor floor at the DeVos Place.

The MichBio Expo and Conference, October 12, at the DeVos Place is designed for professionals from across the life science spectrum and at every stage of business development. The conference will provide attendees the opportunity to hear from top industry speakers, view more than 50 exhibitors, attend special networking events, and meet with business development executives from national pharma and medical device companies.
