Facing the Future: Population [Population, Poverty, Consumption and the Environment] [Population: Issues, Impacts and Solutions]

Posted on: Tuesday, 11 May 2004, 06:00 CDT

Population, Poverty, Consumption, and the Environment (grades 6- 9, 2000, 32 pp.) and Population: Issues, Impacts and Solutions (grades 10 and up, 2001, 64 pp.) are excellent "issues guides" aimed at helping students explore the environmental, economic and social impacts of human population growth. Topics include population growth through history, the concepts of carrying capacity and ecological footprint, and problems of scarcity, inequity and environmental degradation arising from our growing numbers. Each of the guides ends with a section on sustainable solutions to be implemented at the individual, local and/or global levels. A 110-page companion Curriculum Guide (2002) contains hands-on activities, discussion questions and research assignments that encourage critical thinking; support materials; and additional resources. Together, these resources offer a comprehensive means of moving students from an awareness of population pressures to a belief that there are many tangible solutions they can involve themselves in.
