SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Genentech Foundation for Biomedical Sciences announced today that its Board of Directors has awarded 23 grants totaling $1,061,090 to educational institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area that share the Foundation's commitment to supporting innovative science programs for students. This amount represents a 6.1 percent increase in funding as compared to the Foundation's 2003 grants.
"Since its founding in 1988, the Genentech Foundation for Biomedical Sciences has awarded millions of dollars to support biomedical science research and education in the Bay Area," said Herbert Boyer, Ph.D., chairman of the Foundation and Genentech co-founder. "We are proud that our grants continue to expand the scientific knowledge of local students, fueling their excitement to become the next generation of researchers and employees in the Bay Area's growing biomedical sciences industry."
Among this year's grantees is fourth-time grant recipient Andrew P. Hill High School Biotechnology Academy, a program in San Jose, California, dedicated to producing students with biotechnology skills necessary to enter the workforce or to continue on to institutions of higher learning.
"Given the Genentech Foundation's commitment to local science education and its continued generous support, we have been able to provide our students with a valuable after-school tutoring program over the last several of years, which has helped many of them excel in their studies," said Mary Metz, director of the Biotechnology Academy. "The Foundation's support has made a significant impact on our students' interest in the sciences and many students now see science as a possible career."
