UNIVERSITI Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in Kuching will introduce a new Master's degree course aimed at promoting sustainable land use and natural resource management in Malaysia.
The programme known as the SLUSE-M Master's Programme, which will be implemented in collaboration with the Danish Cooperation For Environment and Development (DANCED), is modelled on a similar programme initiated by a Danish consortium of universities.
The SMMP is based on natural and social scientific theories and methodologies aimed at developing interdisciplinary approaches for the understanding of problems and solutions related to the sustainable use of land and water resources.
The programme comprises three major components: the Joint Sluse Module (14 credits), Joint Experiential Module (8 credits) and Unimas Core Modules (30 credits).
The Joint Sluse Module touches on regional introduction, land use and natural resource management, tropical forestry and agricultural system, applied environmental and resource economics, and monitoring using earth observation and GIS.
The Joint Experiential Module involves interdisciplinary methodology, and interdisciplinary field course and report/project work.
The Unimas Core Module represents the core faculty course that would stream the students into three possible majors, namely Master's of Social Science (Development Studies), Master's of Science in Environmental Management (Land Use and Water Resource Management), and Master's of Science in Environmental Management (Coastal Zone Management).
The academic activities will take place primarily at the DANCED lecture theatre in UNIMAS. The field component of the joint Experiential Module will be carried out at selected locations in Sarawak or Sabah.
Lecturers will comprise UNIMAS academic staff, SLUSE Denmark's collaborating institutions, and experts and academics from other local universities, government agencies and private consultancy firms.
The SMMP, a full-time course, is scheduled to commence in November and should be completed in a period not exceeding four semesters in 16 calendar months.
It is designed for graduates and professionals tasked with resource and environmental management; senior government personnel working on resource and environmental conservation; and the general public with a good Bachelor's degree who wish to learn about or update their knowledge on resource and environmental management.
Application forms and details can be obtained from the SLUSE-M website at http://www.unimas.my/SLUSE-M or call Unimas at 082- 672302.
