Heal the Bay to Host Urban Watershed Summit II; South Gate Summit Will Bring Together Communities, Environmentalists and Elected Officials

Posted on: Tuesday, 18 July 2006, 21:00 CDT

Southern California environmental organization Heal the Bay will host the second Urban Watershed Summit, dubbed UWS II, on Thursday July 20 at South Gate Park. The summit, like the debut conference in February 2005, will bring together a diverse group of elected officials, environmentalists and community leaders to discuss the unique challenges facing the restoration of urban creeks and rivers in the Los Angeles region.

"Urban watershed management is so much more than simply clean water," said Dr. Mark Gold, Executive Director of Heal the Bay. "This conference will focus on how it also means urban renewal, effective flood control, habitat and new sources of clean water -- all in all, a more livable community and a greener LA County."

Held in South Gate, the summit will cover topics applicable to all urban creeks and rivers, including subjects as diverse as the implementation of Proposition O (the LA City water bond passed in 2004), success stories from urban creek restorations in other portions of the state, and keynote speeches by both Terry Tamminen, special assistant to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on energy and environmental issues, and Bill Fulton, council member of the City of San Buenaventura. Attendees include the mayors of South Gate, Signal Hill and Lynwood, as well as representatives from the offices of Senator Martha Escutia, Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez and Los Angeles City Council Member Ed P. Reyes.

For more information on the Summit, please visit Heal the Bay's website at www.healthebay.org/uws, or call 800 HEAL BAY. Heal the Bay is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making Santa Monica Bay and Southern California waters safe and healthy for people and marine life.

The Urban Watershed Summit is made possible by our generous sponsors, including Southern California Edison, an Edison International (NYSE:EIX) company, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles.
