Local Partners and Students Celebrate the Past, Present and Future of the U.S. Forest Service

ATLANTA, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Today high school and college students met with natural resource leaders, partners and U.S. Forest Service leadership, including Chief Dale N. Bosworth, at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum to discuss serious environmental issues that are impacting the Atlanta area, including the effects of global warming on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.
Students from Rockdale County 4H's Envirothon Team used research provided by the Forest Service, watched The Greatest Good, a Forest Service documentary chronicling the first 100 years of the agency, and their own observations to develop presentations in four areas of research, including: carbon sequestration (the holding of carbon within living vegetation), outdoor recreation, prescribed fires (controlled wild land fires) and wilderness.
For their contributions, this next generation of conservation leaders was also recognized with awards from the National Forest Foundation (NFF) and Region 8 (the southeast region) of the U.S. Forest Service.
"From history, observation, and experimentation, fire has proven itself a friend of the forest," said Elizabeth Gowasack, a 12th-grade Rockdale 4H Envirothon team member. "By developing a means of controlling fire, forest managers can safely and efficiently reap burning benefits. The Greatest Good follows the evolution of prescribed burning and forest management in general, exposing the ever-growing relationship between man and nature."
The event also highlighted The Greatest Good, a Forest Service documentary that brings together shared perspectives from national organizations, renowned historians, political activists and key partners on one hundred years of conservation and the prospects of the nation's national forests. The film is presented nationally by KCTS/ Seattle Public Television and is distributed to U.S. public television stations by American Public Television.
On Sunday, July 30 from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Georgia Public Television will air The Greatest Good throughout Georgia.
"The event today was a tribute to the past, present and future of our forests and grasslands," said National Forest Foundation president, William Possiel. "To have these remarkable students present their views on the issues that affect their forests, directly to the local and federal leadership of the agency was an impressive experience. That they used The Greatest Good to learn more about the forests, reinforces the importance of the film and its place in Forest Service history."
