Q2 2006 Inventories Drop 14% from Same Quarter 2005: An 8% Increase from 1st Quarter 2006

NPRA, the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, released the results of its second quarter petrochemical production and inventory surveys on Thursday, July 27. VERIS Consulting, LLC conducts the survey for NPRA.

In the second quarter of 2006, total production of the 15 petrochemicals surveyed and reportable was 47.8 billion pounds. This figure represents a decrease of 6% compared with same quarter 2005 production of 50.6 billion pounds of these petrochemicals, and an increase of 3% compared with first quarter 2006 production of 46.5 billion pounds of the same petrochemicals. Total second quarter 2006 inventories of the six petrochemicals reportable was 5.5 billion pounds. This figure represents a decrease of 14% from same quarter 2005 inventories of 6.4 billion pounds, and an increase of 8% compared to the first quarter 2006 inventories of 5.1 billion pounds of the same petrochemicals. From the first quarter of 2006 to the second quarter of 2006, production of 10 of the 15 petrochemicals surveyed and reportable increased, while inventories of three of the seven petrochemicals surveyed and reportable decreased.

NPRA regularly surveys the U.S. petrochemical and refining industries on a quarterly basis regarding the production of 20 petrochemicals. NPRA also surveys end of the quarter inventory levels for eight of those petrochemicals. Data are only reported if they meet NPRA policy for minimum number of reporters and maximum share of a statistic by any one reporting company. The petrochemicals surveyed include ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene and mixed xylenes -- the basic building block chemicals -- and the largest volume first and in some cases, second derivatives of these petrochemicals. The report is published one month after the end of each quarter.

Member subscribers can now access the Survey of Production and Inventory Report for Second Quarter 2006 on the NPRA website. It is part of the NPRA family of Petrochemical Surveys, including the Americas Report Survey of Production published quarterly, and the Selected Petrochemical Statistics, U.S. Trade Data Report published monthly. Please contact Rose Sabijon at rsabijon@npra.org for more information.

NPRA's members include the owners and operators of virtually all U.S. refining capacity as well as most U.S. petrochemical manufacturers.
