Ontario to Head to Court Aug. 22 Seeking to Resume Caledonia Negotiations

TORONTO – The province will begin its legal fight on Aug. 22 to resume land claim negotiations with aboriginals in Caledonia, Ont.

A three-member panel of the Ontario Court of Appeal will hear from lawyers representing the Ministry of the Attorney General. The lawyers will argue for a stay of a decision by Superior Court Justice David Marshall, which ordered all parties to halt talks until aboriginal protesters end their almost six-month occupation of the Douglas Creek Estates housing development site.

If the court rules in favour of the government, negotiations would resume until the appeal is heard.

A date for the appeal hearing has not been set.

Ontario will argue Marshall had no jurisdiction to stop the parties from negotiating.
