First Nations Say Regulations Needed to Protect Drinking Water

Posted on: Monday, 14 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

HALIFAX (CP) - Canada's First Nations say they need more resources to better protect their drinking water.

Representatives from First Nations communities in Atlantic Canada addressed an independent panel studying drinking water today in Halifax.

Michael Cox of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia says regulatory standards should be set for drinking water on reserves.

But he fears that will be done before First Nations people are given the funding to match the extra responsibility.

Panel member Harry Swain says First Nations communities across Canada are in disagreement over what the regulations should look like.

The three-member panel will submit a report to Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice by September as part of a plan to improve water quality in First Nations communities.
