Massive Fire at Recycling Plant Near Windsor-Detroit Border Darkens Sky

AMHERSTBURG, Ont. (CP) - A huge fire at a recycling plant near Windsor, Ont., is sending up clouds of potentially toxic black smoke that can be seen as far away as Detroit.
Fire officials say foam and plastic materials in the garbage outside the plant in Amherstburg, Ont., are fuelling the blaze.
Area residents say police are advising them to evacuate their homes for the night, but aren't ordering them to do so.
Residents have also been told to stay indoors, close their windows, and turn off their air conditioners.
Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs when flames engulfed several storage containers at Enviro-Tech Plastics during the noon hour.
Windsor's hazardous materials team is being sent out to monitor air quality, and neighbouring fire departments are being asked to help control the blaze.
The Ministry of the Environment is also sending two environmental officers to also check on the air.
