Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Announces Investment in Downtown Carbondale
Posted on: Saturday, 19 August 2006, 12:00 CDT
CARBONDALE, Pa., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell said today that the commonwealth will invest $3 million to support construction of the South Main Street parking garage in Carbondale, a key piece of the Lackawanna County community's downtown redevelopment strategy.
"In older neighborhoods across Pennsylvania, we are making strategic investments in high-impact projects that are bringing people back to our downtowns," said Governor Rendell. "The decline of the coal industry brought hard times for many in this area of the state. Today, we're helping to dramatically reverse that decline by supporting projects that generate additional investments and breathe new life into these towns and cities.
"When finished, this project will bring more than 220 additional parking spaces to downtown Carbondale and it will support the community's larger effort to attract new commercial and retail space. All of this will mean new jobs for hardworking local residents and new leisure and shopping opportunities for all."
The $5.3-million parking garage project is part of a larger, multi-million-dollar downtown revitalization effort in the city. When finished, some 5,700 square feet of commercial and retail space will be available and the project will generate as much as $10 million in additional private-sector investment.
Governor Rendell made the investment available through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, a commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects.
