International Falls Hosts Bass Fishing Championship for the Second Year

Posted on: Monday, 28 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

Representatives from the 2nd Annual International Falls Bass Fishing Championship reported record spectator turnouts and record fish for the tournament, held August 26th and 27th. The event was highlighted by a weigh in at Smokey Bear National Park as well as spectator activities and nightly entertainment. Over 200 volunteers helped put on the event.

"We are ecstatic," said Tournament President Gary Potter when asked for his opinion of the event. "The level of community involvement has been second to none." Potter mentioned plans were already underway for next year's event.

John Janousek of Nisswa, Minnesota and Chad Johnson of Rogers, Minnesota won the $10,000 first prize with a combined weight of 30.75 pounds. A full field of 60 teams competed on Rainy River and Rainy Lake for a combined value of purse and prizes of $30,000. The tournament is a two day, two person combined weight competition. The live release, two-day tournament features a unique format using both Rainy Lake and Rainy River.

Despite a challenging first day of fishing for most of the anglers, the tournament wound up breaking records for total combined bag weight. The tournament also broke records for biggest fish, with a 4.91 pound fish brought in by the team of Dave Genz and Larry Bollig.

Northland Fishing Tackle, an event sponsor, also had three teams competing. Duane Peterson of Northland expressed his pleasure at the event turnout. "For us, with three teams in the competition it's really a family affair," said Peterson. "It's a high quality event and the anglers can see this is a fair venue to fish, for sure."
