Out of the Ashes, ENCAP(R) Advanced Soil Technology(TM) Mulch is Restoring America's Forests

ENCAP, LLC, the Green Bay, Wisc.-based innovator of environment-friendly mulch and garden products, today announced stellar results of a two-year forest fire restoration study involving PAM-12(TM) -- ENCAP's proprietary Advanced Soil Technology(TM) (AST(TM)) mulch. ENCAP partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to help restore the Uinta National Forest in Provo, Utah, after the devastating 1,836 acre, Aug. 2004, Red Bull fire.
The Red Bull fire burned Uinta's slopes and canyons for six days at Spanish Fork Canyon forest. Fire damaged terrain was at risk of erosion damage, along with river and stream pollution. To prevent further destruction, the U.S. Forest Service applied ENCAP's product by helicopter to the damaged areas.
Specialists in soil science and erosion control monitored and analyzed the rehabilitation. After the first nine months of field observation, ENCAP outperformed traditional methods of restoration in all Targeted Performance Criteria, including seed establishment, erosion control and soil hydration.
ENCAP manufactures its patented AST(TM) product line by converting agriculturally proven soil enhancers and recycled waste paper into tiny, green granules. The AST(TM) granules cast an invisible net over the soil, dramatically improving conditions for plant growth while preventing erosion, fertilizer run-off, and improving water management. ENCAP supplies major retailers and commercial landscape/golf companies with a variety of lawn and garden products featuring the AST(TM) technology. When combined with seeds, ENCAP provides the perfect all-in-one product for optimal plant growth.
After two years of study, completed August 2006, the Uinta evaluation report demonstrates that ENCAP's AST(TM) technology significantly contributed to the successful restoration of Uinta National Forest in all Targeted Performance Criteria evaluations. "Wildfires do an enormous amount of damage to both the plant life and soil," said Mike Krysiak, president of ENCAP. "Advanced Soil Technology(TM) fights erosion and fertilizer run-off, creates ideal soil conditions for natural plant growth, and is manufactured with recycled waste. AST(TM) is environment-friendly, and based on the study results, versatile and extremely capable."
Robert A. Davidson, Soil Scientist for the U.S. Forest Service added, "Soils treated with PAM-12(TM) on steeper slopes resulted in reduced soil erosion compared to traditional soil treatments using agricultural straw or no-treatment. Depending on circumstances, including soil and hill slope characteristics, restoration purpose and NEPA review, the Uinta National Forest will consider using PAM-12 AST(TM) technology products for future restoration projects."
"Our mission at ENCAP is to develop innovative technologies and products that overcome the world's environmental, soil, and plant related challenges," added Krysiak. "These scientific results from this wildfire rehabilitation project prove the AST(TM) technology out performs traditional soil conditioners, even under the harshest conditions. The results are leading us to many similar opportunities to help restore forests after the devastating effects of wildfires."
Consumers can purchase the ENCAP(R) Advanced Soil Technology(TM) at major retail and home improvements stores under the ENCAP(R) brand, or from many private-label distributors that display the AST(TM) brand mulch and soil conditioner.
