Posted on: Friday, 1 September 2006, 15:00 CDT
DETROIT, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The New Detroit Science Center will offer free weekday admission to Detroit Public Schools students and their parents or adult chaperones starting Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, should the Detroit teacher strike continue into the academic year.
The DPS admission offer is valid weekdays throughout the duration of the strike. A parent or chaperone may bring up to five students. The offer does not include admission to the IMAX(R) Dome Theatre, Dassault Systemes Planetarium or traveling exhibitions.
While at the Science Center, students can benefit from an informal learning environment where they can explore physical, space and life science concepts aligned with the State of Michigan's Curriculum Framework for Science, helping to jumpstart classroom learning. Students and their parents also can utilize science scavenger hunts and activity sheets to further their learning experience.
The Science Center features 110,000 square feet of scientific exploration including more than 200 hands-on exhibits in five themed laboratories focusing on motion, matter and energy, waves and vibrations, life science and space. A separate gallery space offers hands-on exhibits and programs for Pre-school - Kindergarten children. Live demonstrations, shows and programs bring science concepts to life. The Dassault Systemes Planetarium offers teachers their choice of nine different programs for students in Preschool through 12th grade. Michigan's only IMAX(R) Dome Theatre uses state-of-the-art technology to entertain as well as educate. Traveling exhibits provide a unique opportunity to explore science concepts in depth.
