U.S. Customs and Border Protection Intercepts Over 14 Million in Counterfeit Illegal Textile Products

Posted on: Tuesday, 5 September 2006, 18:00 CDT

SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Savannah Port of Entry has seized more than $14 million in goods that were misdescribed in an effort to circumvent trade laws and regulations.

CBP Officers and Import Specialists discovered shipments of jerseys presented with false country of origin documents. The shipments containing almost 1 million jerseys and shirts were part of an alleged scheme to circumvent the China textile quotas by claiming they were produced in another country.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will continue to vigorously enforce our trade laws and are committed to facilitating and stimulating the flow of legitimate international trade. Port Director Frank Jaramillo stated, "Our CBP Officers and Import Specialists continue to maintain a strong enforcement posture and will continue to review textile shipments to ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing imports. Textiles will continue to be a priority issue."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
