Smith Barney Clients Drive Nationwide Planting of 100,000+ Trees; Smith Barney Partners With National Arbor Day Foundation to Fortify National Forests and ''re-Green'' Katrina-Impacted Communities

Posted on: Tuesday, 19 September 2006, 12:00 CDT

In June 2006, Smith Barney and The National Arbor Day Foundation announced a campaign to plant a tree for every Smith Barney client who switched to paperless online account statements. Smith Barney clients' overwhelming response to this campaign has driven the number of trees to be planted beyond the 100,000 mark, enabling the fortification of three national forests: The Huron-Manistee National Forest in Michigan; the Ocala National Forest in Florida; the Sequoia National Forest in California and the "re-greening" of Katrina-impacted communities.

"We greatly appreciate our clients' significant contribution to the success of this campaign," said Craig Pfeiffer, executive vice president, Smith Barney Global Private Client Group. "It was an honor to do something in their names that will have a lasting and positive effect on our environment. We look forward to continued involvement in this effort."

"Passing the 100,000-tree mark is a tremendous success in Smith Barney's efforts to reduce paper usage, while planting trees in our nation's forests and communities in need," commented John Rosenow, president of The National Arbor Day Foundation. "The company's clients fully embraced this initiative and their effort will result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in economic and environmental benefits while beautifying America's communities and treasured national forests."

Smith Barney is committed to making a positive impact on the environment through the planting and conservation of thousands of trees. Providing clients with the ability to view statements online not only reduces the production of paper, but also cuts back on gas and water consumption, greenhouse gases, carbon monoxide emissions and solid waste. By absorbing CO2, purifying the air and preventing soil erosion, the trees will help rebuild and restore areas that have been damaged by wildfire, disease or other natural causes.
