KENTFIELD, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, October 7, the California State Parks Foundation will award its 4th Annual Golden Poppy Award to Ambassador L.W. "Bill" Lane, Jr., and the employee volunteers of Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The Golden Poppy Award recognizes a company or individual who has made a significant contribution to protecting, enhancing or advocating for California's state parks. The event, "A Tribute to Volunteerism," will be held at the recently restored Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park in Sacramento. Special guests include State Parks Director Ruth Coleman, Undersecretary of Resources Karen Scarborough and Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo.

Ambassador L. W. "Bill" Lane, Jr., California State Parks Foundation Trustee and Honorary Ranger of both the National Parks and State Parks Systems, has dedicated many years and significant resources to promoting volunteer efforts in parks. Ambassador Lane was instrumental in the protection and restoration of the Leland Stanford Mansion. As the former publisher of Sunset Magazine, Ambassador Lane brought parks' and other environmental issues to the forefront of public attention in countless editorials and articles. He established the Ranger Lane Volunteer Enhancement Fund at the Foundation to promote and fund volunteer efforts at state parks now and into the future. Since its inception, the Fund has made grants totaling more than $200,000 to volunteer efforts.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company and its employees have a long history of environmental initiatives and contributions, having earned more than 120 awards since 1990 for a wide variety of environmental efforts. For the past five years, the company has sponsored the California State Parks Foundation's Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup program, providing almost $500,000 in grants for park improvements during that time and supplying hundreds of employee volunteers annually. PG&E's other charitable programs include its collaborations with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Save San Francisco Bay, California Audubon, Ducks Unlimited, and its successful Solar Schools Program.

The California State Parks Foundation is the only statewide nonprofit agency dedicated solely to protecting, enhancing and advocating for California's 278 state parks. With the support of its 75,000 members and partners, the Foundation raises funds to improve and expand park programs and facilities, with special emphasis on environmental education, diversity, volunteerism and stewardship. Since its founding in 1969, the Foundation has provided more than $120 million in support of state park projects.
