Boat Capsizes in Lake Superior

GRAND MARAIS, Mich. - A fishing boat capsized in rough Lake Superior waters, leaving three people missing after one was rescued by the Coast Guard, officials said.

The Coast Guard suspended the search after looking Friday and into Saturday afternoon. The survivor reported that the three went under, said Brett Gary, assistant duty officer at the Coast Guard's District 9 command center.

The boat capsized about noon Friday, the Coast Guard said. A rescue swimmer lowered from a helicopter rescued Robert Nyman, 62, who was clinging to the overturned boat, after he spent nearly 14 hours in 55-degree water, officials said.

Nyman was discharged Sunday from a hospital.

Unaccounted for were the boat's owner, Willard Handrich, 90, his son Eldon Handrich, 59, and Eldon Handrich's wife, Maggie, 60, the Coast Guard said.

The search began after the National Parks Service at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore reported that the boat left Grand Marais Marina on Friday morning but failed to return as scheduled that afternoon.
