Third Quarter 2006 U.S. Petrochemical Production Rises 8% From Third Quarter 2005; Increases 4% From Second Quarter 2006

Posted on: Monday, 30 October 2006, 15:00 CST

NPRA, the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, released the results of its third quarter petrochemical production and inventory surveys on Friday, October 27. VERIS Consulting, LLC conducts the survey for NPRA.

In the third quarter of 2006, total production of the 15 petrochemicals surveyed and reportable was 49.7 billion pounds. This figure represents an increase of 8% compared with same quarter 2005 production of 46.2 billion pounds of these petrochemicals, and an increase of 4% compared with second quarter 2006 production of 47.7 billion pounds of the same petrochemicals. Total third quarter 2006 inventories of the six petrochemicals reportable was 5.4 billion pounds. This figure represents a decrease of 14% from same quarter 2005 inventories of 6.3 billion pounds, and a decrease of 2% compared to the second quarter 2006 inventories of 5.5 billion pounds of the same petrochemicals. From the second quarter of 2006 to the third quarter of 2006, production of 12 of the 15 petrochemicals surveyed and reportable increased while inventories of three of the seven petrochemicals surveyed and reportable decreased.

NPRA regularly surveys the U.S. petrochemical and refining industries on a quarterly basis regarding production of 20 petrochemicals. NPRA also surveys end of the quarter inventory levels for eight of those petrochemicals. Data are only reported if they meet NPRA policy for minimum number of reporters and maximum share of a statistic by any one reporting company. The petrochemicals surveyed include ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene and mixed xylenes -- the basic building block chemicals -- and the largest volume first and in some cases, second derivatives of these petrochemicals. The report is published one month after the end of each quarter.

Member subscribers can now access the Survey of Production and Inventory Report for Third Quarter 2006 on the NPRA website. It is part of the NPRA family of Petrochemical Surveys, including the Americas Report Survey of Production published quarterly, and the Selected Petrochemical Statistics, U.S. Trade Data Report published monthly. For more information on the reports and how to subscribe, please contact Rose Sabijon at rsabijon@npra.org.

NPRA is a national trade association with more than 450 member companies, including virtually all U.S. refiners and petrochemical manufacturers.
