"This project exemplifies Dominion's commitment to community service and to the environment," said Eva S. Hardy, senior vice president-External Affairs & Corporate Communications. "By working with Habitat for Humanity to build an energy-efficient home, we accomplish two important goals."
The house is located in Charles City County, about 38 miles east of Richmond and 18 miles west of Williamsburg. This is Richmond Habitat's first venture outside of the Richmond metropolitan area.
The house also is Habitat's first modular home. The prefabricated building was sent to the site in two parts, placed on the foundation and joined together by professional carpenters. The house will be finished with daily assistance from Dominion employees and area volunteers. Each day of construction will require 20 workers who will be involved in decking, roofing, painting, siding and landscaping, among other activities.
The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion, awarded a $50,000 grant to the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity to help pay for costs of the house not covered by volunteer labor.
"On behalf of the Board, we extend our sincere appreciation to the volunteers who will make one family's dream come true, and for the opportunity to partner with the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity and Dominion on this project," said Michael Holmes, chairman of the Charles City County Board of Supervisors. "Affordable and diverse housing is a challenge for our locality, and this represents one solution."
