China's Zeng Qinghong Stresses Importance of Science Popularization

Beijing, 4 July: Zeng Qinghong, CCP [Chinese Communist Party] Central Political Bureau Standing Committee member and state vice- president, arrived at China Science and Technology Museum to participate in the activities of the national science popularization day along with the broad masses of people on 4 July. He, on behalf of the Party Central Committee, extended cordial greetings to the broad masses of science and technology workers, science popularization workers, and science popularization volunteers across the nation.

Zeng Qinghong stressed: Science popularization is a fundamental work that relates to the development of a country and the prosperity of nationalities, which requires joint and unremitting efforts of the entire party and entire society. It is necessary to earnestly combine the experiences; further promote science popularization work in rural areas; enterprises, schools, communities, and millions of households; and constantly create a new situation of science popularization work.

At 0930 in the morning [0130 gmt], Zeng Qinghong arrived at the square in front of China Science and Technology Museum. Activities titled "Welcoming Olympic Games with Sci-Tech Workout" and an exhibition titled "First National Exhibition of Excellent Sci-Tech Wall Charts" held here attracted many people. Zeng Qinghong learned about the related situations in details while walking and looking at the activities and exhibition. Zeng Qinghong happily said:

At the time marking the second anniversary of the promulgation of the law on popularization of science and technology, China Association for Science and Technology and organizations under China Association for Science and Technology at various levels across the nation widely launched diverse science popularization activities. This has played a very positive role in promoting the dissemination of the sci-tech knowledge, enhancing sci-tech concept, advocating sci-tech measures, carrying forward sci-tech spirit, establishing and carrying out the concept of sci-tech development, further improving the quality of all nationalities, and accomplishing the historical tasks of building a well-off society in an all-round manner among the broad masses of people, especially the teenagers. At the end of the activities, Zeng Qinghong said to the responsible cadres of the relevant departments that science and technology is the No 1 productive force. The development of science and technology cannot be separated from the knowledge of popularization of science and technology. The party committees and governments at various levels should adhere to the guidance of Deng Xiaoping theory and the important thinking of the "Three Representations" [Chinese: san ge dai biao; on the importance of the communist party in modernizing the nation - the party represents advanced production forces, advanced Chinese culture, and the basic interests of the people]; earnestly enhance the leadership of science popularization work from the overall situation and strategic height; frequently study and solve the practical problems of the science popularization work; give full play to the role of organizations under Association of Science and Technology at various levels in the science popularization work. It is necessary to especially emphasize using the unique advantages of the news media; further strengthen propaganda efforts for science popularization; lead more cadres and people to participate in the science popularization activities; make efforts to create a sound common practice in emphasizing science, talking about science, learning science, and using science in the entire society so as to provide powerful talent guarantee and intellectual support for the reform and opening up and modernization.

Liu Qi, Liu Yunshan, Zhou Yongkang, Wang Gang, Xu Caihou, He Yong, and relevant responsible cadres participated in the activities on the morning of 4 July.
