PA DCNR: New Signs Help Educate Visitors About The Pennsylvania Wilds

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- To help educate visitors about the forests, wildlife and conservation history of the Pennsylvania Wilds, colorful and informative kiosks have been placed at 20 state parks in the region.
"These kiosks introduce visitors to the special places in the Pennsylvania Wilds, and they share the conservation success story that created the region," Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Michael DiBerardinis said.
At Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron and Potter counties, the panels in the kiosks focus, primarily, on wildlife. At Black Moshannon in Centre County the bog ecosystem is featured, and Cherry Springs in Potter County has panels on dark skies.
The Elk Scenic Drive, a 127-mile corridor passing through Clinton, Clearfield, Centre and Elk counties, features additional multi-paneled kiosks and waysides at five viewing areas: Hicks Run, Hoover Farm, Beaver Run Dam, Two Rock Run Scenic View, and the Russell P. Letterman (formerly Fish Dam Run) Scenic View.
Seven more kiosks are planned for the Pine Creek Valley, including the Jersey Shore in Lycoming County. A series of eight to 10 signs that share the mystery and wonder of the old growth forest at Cook Forest State Park in Clarion and Forest counties is also being developed.
"Our plan for outdoor recreation in the Pennsylvania Wilds includes improving visitor services through better signage," DiBerardinis said. "With nearly 100 new interpretive signs, we are making progress toward our goal of ensuring the visitor has the best outdoor experience possible."
The Pennsylvania Wilds initiative is meant to increase outdoor recreation and heritage tourism across north central Pennsylvania consistent with responsible stewardship of the region's public lands. The Pennsylvania Wilds covers Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, Lycoming, McKean, Potter, Tioga and Warren counties.
