How interesting that a major media outlet suddenly recognized there's money to be made from an outdoor sport.

A film crew from CNBC recently wrapped up filming a feature news story on the impact of hunting to a state's economy for an upcoming episode of CNBC News.

The show featured pheasant hunting at Dakota River Ranch, in the Aberdeen area. Participating in the filming of the show were Mike Hegedus, feature correspondent for CNBC; David Nomsen, Vice President of Governmental Affairs, Pheasants Forever Inc.; Governor Mike Rounds; representatives of the SD Office of Tourism and Economic Development; and guests of Dakota River Ranch.

"Feature stories that highlight the great hunting opportunities we have here in the Aberdeen area help drive more visitors and hunting enthusiasts to experience the wonderful hospitality and experiences to be found here," said Nancy Krumm, Executive Director for the Aberdeen Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"This earned media exposure is a great benefit to supplement our advertising budget. We appreciate the cooperation of those businesses in the area that help us make these efforts possible and the assistance of the SD Office of Tourism."

Marveling at Misaw: I don't like to say "I told you so," but in reality that is how it is, especially when it comes to excellent angling and a Canadian bush fishing lodge.

I plan to go back to Misaw Lake Lodge in northern Saskatchewan in the future.

And it appears Field and Stream magazine knows a good thing when it experiences it, too. Misaw Lake Lodge rates as one of its 25 best fishing lodges in North America for trophy pike fishing.

Oh, deer: At this time of the year, there generally seems to be a rash of animal vs. human encounters that make the news.

In the Sheboygan, Wis., area, three men had an encounter with a large, 6-point, male deer while they walked through a park. The three wrestled the deer to the ground after it supposedly attacked them. One of the trio called police on a cell phone pleading for help.

In the Grand Marais, Minn., area, right off the Gunflint Trail, 38-year-old Julie Coleman found herself stuck in her tree stand while hunting deer. A mating pair of moose decided to hold her "hostage" in the tree. Coleman used her cell phone to call authorities to come and rescue her.

One would think that once would be more than enough, but that wasn't the case for one couple recently.

In suburban Minneapolis, a wild turkey decided to crash through a dining-room picture window and run through the home of Sandy Cobbs.

This was the second time something like this happened. The last incident took place in 2004. The first incident resulted in officers shooting that bird. This time the police managed to get the bird outside the home and herded it back into the wild.

The cold truth: Northern Wisconsin correspondent John Plaza reports single-digit temperatures coming to the Chetek, Wis., area this week, and that means ice anglers have started champing at the bit.

We can expect cold weather here this week, but not the kind those folks will encounter.

Lake Michigan: Improved perching on the lakefront, with the south siders checking in with excellent catches of bigger fish. Brown trout and a few steelhead coming in around Waukegan, Winthrop Harbor and Kenosha.

Fox River: Keep an eye on the current below the McHenry Dam again for walleye action. Also check the area below the old Batavia Dam as well for walleyes.

Fox Chain: Stout-hearted anglers willing to put up with the rain and weather changes could see some explosive muskie action on Channel Lake.
