New Windstorm Rakes B.C. South Coast, Power is Cut to 190,000

VANCOUVER (CP) – The B.C. south coast is being hammered by another windstorm that has knocked out power to at least 190,000 people.

The storm has uprooted trees, knocked down power lines and disrupted travel with winds up to 100 kilometres an hour or more in some places. There have been delays on at least one B.C. Ferry sailing while trees down on the Stanley Park causeway in Vancouver blocked traffic heading to the Lion’s Gate Bridge.

Lights are out at many Lower Mainland intersections, causing traffic chaos.

On Vancouver Island, Port Alberni resident Susan Jones says the town is being swept by hurricane-force winds that have knocked out most power.

This is the latest in a series of storms that have brought wind, rain and snow to the south B.C. coast since early November.
