TOURISTS helped rescue illegal immigrants after their rickety fishing boat washed up on a shore in the Canary Islands.

Britons were among the holidaymakers who wrapped them in towels and gave them food and water as they waited for medics to arrive at Las Carpinteras Beach, south of Las Palmas.

The refugees, from Gambia and Senegal, had been at sea for 15 days.

One man was dead. Survivors said two other men died during the voyage from Africa.

Tourist Juan Garcia, 35, said: “We did did whatever we could to help.”
