Jan. 3–Salt Lake County-based Black Diamond Equipment Ltd. has opened a product Demo Center in La Grave, France.

The mountains around La Grave have some of the world’s steepest pitches, making it a prime location for testing Black Diamond’s ski mountaineering, alpining and free-riding equipment, said company spokeswoman Katie Cavicchio.

The Demo Center is in La Grave’s famed Edelweiss Hotel. Black Diamond’s latest marketing push coincides with the hiring of Charlie Lynch, who had been with North Face, as its new athlete and event coordinator. Laurel Hunter also has been retained to design graphics for Web and print materials.

In addition, Black Diamond marketing manager Colleen Graham Nipkow recently received a “Wasatch Outdoor Volunteer Award” for her work as president of the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center.
